potter, clay and blessings, inc. was formed by Steve Schaefer at the nursing home bedside of his good friend, Jamie Ziegler, while he searched for activity to give her focus outside of her failing health and to find purpose for her life as she lay uncaring. With more than thirty years employed in the nursing home industry this change of life events gave this couple a unique perspective and through it Stephen designed this non-profit organization.

The general purpose of this organization is to inspire reform in the nursing home industry.

The primary purpose of this organization is to provide insight toward a more fulfilling life for people with physical and mental challenges. The organization strives to provide opportunities for people with physical and mental challenges to mold a better life for themselves. Specific focus of this organization is toward those identified people living in institutions (nursing homes), having lived in institutions or who might otherwise (without intervention and opportunity) need to live in institutions.

The inspiration for reform originates from nursing home education, including, but not limited to motivational workshops and seminars for individuals involved in the nursing home field.

The organization also provides guidance for individuals and families through the health care maze from examining options and finding resources to choosing a nursing home; and the admissions process through discharge. This guidance is available in person, per telephone, via email and in small group workshops. Mr. Schaefer is determined to be able to operate this organization without charge to families and residents of nursing homes for services provided directly to them.

potter, clay and blessings, inc. also provides opportunities for people with disabilities who live in nursing homes to contribute and develop self-worth through the FUNd-Festivals-to-Go program and other programs as they are developed. Contracts for services needed for special programs and projects are given first priority to those people with disabilities who have previously been institutionalized or who might become so without intervention and opportunity.

The officers of potter, clay and blessings, inc. are available to serve as leaders in consulting and guidance for small businesses with strategic planning, organizational fund raising and problem solving challenges.

What people are saying about our programs...
On the Other Side:
Employed on Friday and a Resident on Monday

  • I liked that your program is informal. You talked to me—not at me.
  • This is the best in-service I have attended in the six years since I started this home-health company.
  • I wish I had brought more staff to hear this...owners, administrators—they all need to hear this.
  • On the Other Side is such a “real life” experience—so much we can learn from you.
  • I wish I could empower everyone in long term care to work with their heart like you two.
  • You two are so honest! I am glad I was here.
Overcoming the YESBUTS...
Creative Problem Solving

  • I loved going so outside of the box. This was fun and educational.
  • I can't believe how quickly you moved my team from the problem to possible solutions. And since the solutions are their ideas—it will easier for us to implement them.
  • I learned a lot about problem solving. We really did have some techniques that need improved. This was great.
  • You encouraged everyone to share their ideas. People talked who hardly ever share in our meetings! You two are great at this!!!
  • It was nice how you made it fun while we learned and got everyone so involved.
  • This program left us with a lot of positive energy.
Who Me? Lead a Group?
Small Group Leadership
  • I never heard about all of the differences in adult learners. Your program was down to earth and I learned so much I can take back to the office.
  • This class taught me a lot about myself and my learning styles. I'm looking forward to using what I've learned in the groups I lead at work.
  • So many ideas for the problems I've been having—so many new ideas for solving them. I'm ready! No more people coming late, people monopolizing, homework not done...bring it on!
  • The assignments we had between the two classes let me experience what you're talking about with us. This class is the best I remember ever attending.
